Hi all:
I am building my version of Alan DeVilbiss’ island shop.
My 20″ planer and table saw will be at opposite ends ( 11 feet apart), with a pre-seperator box at the mid-point. I plan on purchasing a Delta 50-760 portable dust collector ( thank you FW # 183, pg. 39) and placing it an adjacent room ,to reduce shop noise.
With an 8′ ceiling the vertical from the seperator box is 5 feet, and the diagonal run to the collector will be about 15 feet.
The pre-separator box will be 36″ long, by 28″ wide and 28″ high. Two baffels will divide it into three sections(12″ by 28″ each): with wood chip entry from both sides, and exhaust to the collector up the centre section.
Assuming I size all the duct work corectly ( I am reading Woodshop Dust Control by Sandor Nagyszalanczy) my question is:
Will my modified dust collection plan work efficently with the Delta 50-760?
Thanks for any insights
Stewie

A 1 1/2 horsepower dust collector would be woefully undersized.
Even the best rated collector in the article, the Delta you are cosidering, just barely managed to generate what is considered an adequate air flow when connected to a short straight pipe for the air flow tests. In your system with multiple bends and long pipe runs it will definitely be underpowered.
You should be using a 3 hp machine minimum, as a rough guess, for what you are planning, and a larger horsepower may in fact be necessary. The portable dust collectors are only adequate when they are within a few feet of the machine and are directly connected with a short hose.
A twenty inch planer is an industrial weigh machine that will create a massive amount of chips that will clog up the machine instantly if you don't have adequate air volume and speed.

Thank you , John.
Has FWW run a comparison on larger dust collectors? Or do I assume a 3hp from Delta would be the pick of the crop ?
Perhaps a cheaper solution would be ear plugs and put the collector above the pre-seperator box.

When you get up into the 3 hp and larger range there are a number of companies whose only business is making dust collectors and their products are likely to be better designed than what Delta offers. Oneida for one always gets high marks for the quality of their products and their customer service.
