How do you hook up a dust collection system to a lathe? Or do you just for go it for the lathe and sweep the floor. I am setting up my new dust collection system but the lathe seems to be a real challange. Any suggestions?

Dale;
I have a shelf behind my lathe level with the bed. I have a 5" hose in the shelf at the point of the headstock. I also have a wooden hood made fron 1/4" plywood that I can place behind the hole to help scoop the dust when I sand bowls. I don't use it at all for wood chips. It doesn't take long to fill the duct collector with wood chips and they are easier to sweep off the floor than empty from the dust collector. My main concern is to keep the fine dust out of my lungs. I turn mostly bowls and the system works well. I also have an air scrubber on the ceiling for anything that gets out of the system.

I would use one of those floor sweeps underneath. You want the dust controlled first! Shavings etc. are minor compared to the risk of dust damage to your lungs.. I use both a dust collector and an Air cleaner.. One piece of equipment goes on and they both go on..
DaleK;
Here is what I did. I put a attic vent fan in the window behind my lathe. It works great for taking the sanding dust and blowing it outside, does a good job on the heat also. The shaving fall to the floor and go up the floor sweep.
I've tried several different boxes attached to my DC and they work for shavings but not sanding dust. I've decided it is easier to clean up centrally located shavings rather than a shop full of dust. I have an air filter but usually the dust gets all over everything before getting filtered.
Good luck;
