I need some advice and input concerning dust collection for a small basement workshop. I’m currently upgrading and remodeling my basement shop and would like a dust collector that is small, portable and efficient. Also am considering an ambient cleaner to go along with it. There will be no ductwork involved. Advice on brands, models and other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Dan

For your air cleaner, I'd recommend JDS, hands-down. I have one and love it. Every review I've ever read has placed them well above other brands.

I'm partial to the canister-filter equipped collectors, and would especially want this in a basement area. They filter down to 1 mic and cleaning & emptying them doesn't involve the mess that cleaning a bag filter does. Penn State has a 1.5 HP that's designed to run efficiently on 110V (you didn't mention if you have 220V available or not; that will determine which models you'll consider).
Grizzly has a 1HP that draws only 9 amps on 110V. Stated CFM is only 800 though, pretty low. I lean toward 1.5HP, 11" impeller or more, since the contractor's saw take alot of air flow to collect from.
Don't know about Jet or Delta -- I prefer to find an equivalent DC at a lower cost than their's generally run.

I have Delta's DC. I do not recall the modle number but I know that it runs on 110v. And it is a 1200CFM unit. I am quite satisfied with mine and would recommend it to anyone.

I've got the jet dc100 ck. It's got the canister filter, which is why I bought it. It runs just fine on 110 v and I can leave more than one tool hooked up at a time. It does a great job with the 12" planer and 6" jointer. It is short enough to fit in my basement with 7' ceilings. The Delta was too tall. Bottom line: Get one with a canister filter.
I recently (last 2 weeks) initiated a thread on this very subject. Look back and you'll see some great advice. fwiw, I wound up with a Jet AFS-1000B air filtration system to clean up the ambient air in the shop and a Jet DC-1100A, 1 1/2 HP canister dust collector from which I ran a short length of 4" metal duct with drop offs for my TS, my router table and my thickness planer. The DC sounds like more than you're asking for, but I was convinced by the responses here that I needed the 1 1/2 to handle more than 1 machine and the canister seemed like the way to go to avoid cleaning filter bags. All tolled, it was under $1K up and running. It's hard to actually *see* that the DC is providing better performance than a shop vac in terms of chip removal, but the filtration is definitely better on the DC and it's gratifying to see all of the fine dust travel up to the Filtration System (I ceiling mounted it).

Thanks everyone for your input. This has really given me a lot to go on and I'm already pursuing all suggestions.Sincerely

I have both of the JDS machines(DC and AC) and love them. The DC is 110/220v 1.5hp and1250cfm,the only thing I would do different is go with the canister insted of the bag filter wich JDS does offer now I beleive,if not anyones would fit with the same dia.For $300.00 I dont think you can go wrong(1250cfm).I have my tablesaw hooked up,my 54A jointer, hitachi MS,router table, bandsaw, one on the bench for the mortising machine or sanders and a floor sweep. My mainlines run on the ceiling and drops off that down the walls. This works good for me although everyone says to run your mainlines about 36" of the floor.Good luck with whatever you do.

For good information on dust collection visit Bill Pentz's site at http://billpentz.com//woodworking/cyclone/index.cfm.
Based on that information, you'll be better able to determine the most appropriate dust control measures for your situation.

Here is one that the guys on woodnet.net are saying good things about.
Harbor Freight 2 hp 110volt $149.00
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=45378
Then this conversion
http://www.wynnenv.com/35A_series_cartridge_kit.htm $82 plus shipping
So a canister 2 hp DC for $231 plus tax and shipping. HMMMM
Peace,
Martin
