I use a standard 1-1/2″ ribbed vacuum hose attached to my belt sander and/or orbital sander. I clip the power cord to the hose to keep it out of the way but the problem is how do you prevent the ribbed hose from snagging on the edges of the workpiece as you move the equipment across the surface. I’ve tried to find smooth external wall hose but no luck. I’ve also tried rigging up an overhead gantry for the hose but, while this is an improvement, it’s still not ideal. How do other people solve this issue? Thanks…

Have it hang down from the ceiling ?

I put hoses and wires over my shoulder when using power sanders.
Or, if you prefer, hang a elastic "shock" cord from the ceiling and hook it around the hose/wire.
I use a 5 HP portable Shop Vac and purchased the 20' hose that is available. 3 eye hooks in studs on ceiling spaced on both ends and center of the work-bench. A short bungy cord with hooks on each end can move to any eye hook in a second and hook it on that end. Wrap the bungy cord around the hose and electrical cord on the other and hook it. Mobility in any direction with no snagging.
BTW... I used too (and sometimes still do) use the method Howard mentioned about draped over the shoulder and especially when I am hooked up to a router in lieu of an ROS.

My thanks to everyone for their input and, yes, I've tried all those suggestions before and just thought there might have have been, to quote a well-known phrase or expression, 'A Better Way'...ah well...(sigh)...
I would offer that any hose with any amount of flexibility, ribbed or not, will be soft enough to want to grab the edge of your work surface as it comes up and over to the sander. That 90 degree bend is a lot of friction to overcome.

The reason I went to a 20'
The reason I went to a 20' hose. I can allow enough hose to hang down on the table going to the dust port so there is no sharp bend. With a short hose this is not that feasible and yes it will find a way to grab an edge.
