I would like to know what is more effective collecting dust on a Makita 1013 or Bosch 4410- a 6″ DC with a funnel like hood or a shop vacuum hooked up to the dust port on the back of the tool?
I am going to build a stand for the SCMS, but I want to make sure that I hook up the correct type of DC to the saw. I can incorporate the Shop Vac into the base or the DC. (not sure that I want to do both).

I've got the LS 1013, and I use a 4" dust collection hose connected to the dust port with an adapter. It gets some dust, but doesn't work all that well. When I get around to making a permanent miter station, I will make some sort of box/hood behind the saw to catch more of what gets thrown back there. I think that will work much better, but can't say for sure yet.
A shop vac won't pull enough CFM unless the hood allows the dust to drop.
I am about to start building a bench alongside one of my garage walls and mounting my CMS on the bench. I will have a hood made up to fit into one of the stud bays (14 1/2" wide) and extend out to the backside of the CMS. If I create a funnel shape at the bottom of the hood, the dust falls into a container of some sort and I won't need to worry about a vac or DC.

I recently set up my new bosch 4410 in my basement workshop where dust cannot become a problem or else..
I use a 6.5 gallon ridgid 2 in 1 shop vac attached to the dust port and found that most of the dust was captured satisfactorily. The problem that became apparent was that the shop vac was limited in capacity and efficiency ie: as I cut more and more wood I noticed a corresponding increase in the dust being scattered and not being sucked up. The filter quickly plugs up and stops doing its job a lot faster than I can live with.
Long story short, for occasional use the shop vac, with a clean 2 micron filter is good but for sustained use with time spent sawing and not emptying shop vacs I would absolutely prefer a proper (850cfm or better) DC with its higher cfm and capacity.
By the way, the 4410 is a superb saw and I am absolutely happy with its performance.

UPDATE: I have had the chance to have used the 4410 a lot more since writing the above and have paid much more attention to the shop vacs effectiveness. I find that the 4410 throws off a lot of sawdust in certain circumstances and that the shop vac inconsistently provided the desired dust capture. I did a shop cleanup today and was disappointed to find that the dust accumulation around the saw was actually worst than I thought, I will have to get something better that gets the job done right.
