Dust collection round drum vs. box
I have a 2-stage dust collector w/ a 35 gallon fiber drum. It fills up pretty quick when the planer is running so I’m thinking of either purchasing a 55 gallon drum or building a plywood box and sealing all the seams. Oneida Air (builder of the collector) suggested that having a long length of hose between the bottom of the cyclone and the barrel would negatively impact performance. Does anybody know if replacing the round barrel with a rectangular or square box will adversely impact performance? Confession: the collector is in the attic and I’m tired of going up there to empty the drum; I keep spilling it. So, a box mounted next to the ceiling will nicely fit between the wall and my garage door rail and save me space on the floor. The other option is to extend pipe from the collector through the ceiling and down to a drum. The drum will not fit between the wall and the door rail.

I have a 2hp collector with a plywood collection box ahead of it in the line. Box is 4' tall, 4' wide & 2' deep, partitioned internally so primary chamber is 2.5' with a 6" hole into 2nd chamber at top of partition. Works great & requires 4 or 5 large contractor-type garbage bags to empty. Front has a full-width, drop down door to expose both chambers for emptying.
Piker,

Piker,
What's the purpose of the split-chamber?
