I’m looking for advise on what size, and which dc to get for my situation.
Unlike many situation that get posted, I’m not able to move my dc from machine to machine. Because of my small shop area, a 10′ x 12′ basement area, I have to put the dust collector in the adjoining basement area, against the common wall, and duct through the wall. The ducting will pass through at either 24″ from the floor, or at the ceiling, which is about 8′, whichever is more efficient.
Currently, I only have 110v available to me, but that may change soon. That doesn’t help me now though.
I will only be using it on 1 machine at a time. The farthest distance to any machine is approx 10′. I will be able to change hookups, from machine to machine.
I will be using it to connect to a ts, jointer, planer, bandsaw, router table w/ 2 – 2 1/2″ dust ports, and misc hand toold with dust collection on them.
My questions are:
1. What size dc should I get to fit this application
2. What features should I be looking for when buying the dc, ie motor size, fan size, bag filtration size etc.
3. Recommendations
Thanks.

My previous shop was in my basement, I would recommend the best filtration you can afford. I currently have a Delta 1.5 hp with a 1 micron felt bag in my current garage/shop. If I had to do it over I would be the Jet or similar with the cartridge filter. 1.5 hp is about the top end you can run with 110. Ten feet isn't a bad run length, if you use 5" hose and blast gates you should have enough suction. However, I am not an expert on dust collection. I am sure others will weigh in at some point.
It will help responders here if you specify an approximate budget and whether you want to "buy for the future" or just for now. With the tools you have, a 1.5HP collector would probably work pretty well, especially if you can have the table saw first in line (closest to the DC) as it requires the most air flow.
If you have the $$ though, a more powerful collector will be more effective and give you more flexibility down the line, cyclone would be nice. With non-cyclones, I favor cartridge filters rather than bags. Use as little flex hose as you can -- it dramatically decreased air flow.
I worked out of a very cramped basement shop for a number of years with a 1.5hp Delta 50-850 collector. Even with as much as 20' of flex hose attached to my planer I was able to collect the majority of chips. In your case I think that a similar unit would meet and even exceed all your current demands, however both pheasenthunter and forest girl make excellant points.
A cartridge filter is far superior to a bagged unit especially if you lack air filtration like I did. The finest and most dangerous particulates will blow right through most bags and bath everything in a fine dust. You can upgrade a bagged unit with a cartridge from a number of sources wynn environmental is a good place to start.
Looking into a larger unit including a cyclone, based on current and future needs would be wise. That being said I recently relocated to a new space three times the size of my old one and with the addition of an aftermarket cyclone separator and cartridge filter I was able to convert my bagged unit to a cyclone for less than $450.00
Hope this helps and good luck
The ability to set up shop. as AZMO suggested, for me is a luxury. Because of the small space, I have to move the machines around to work. Its clumsy, but you do what you have to do.
If I set up the dc, as I suggested, with the vent pipe going through the wall, I will be able to keep to a single flex run, directly to the dc. Apparently, the 1 1/2-2hp system will work out.
I've narrowed the field down to 4 possibilities:
1. Jet DC-1100RCK
2. Delta 50-850a
3. Grizzly G05482 (2hp)
4. Grizzly G10282 (1 1/2hp)
Any comments or suggestions? Thanks.
FWW did a test on dust collectors with lots of good info that I used to make some of the decisions you are faced with now. You could find this and other related reviews on the FWW web site.
I also thought Forest Girl's response was super good. She covered a lots of ground with few well chosen words loaded with good advise.
Good luck with your research and choices.

Recruiter,
I have 1.5 HP Delta with a bag on it as well. It is mounted outside my shop in a closet/wood storage space. I have used 6" pipe and brought it overhead into my garage and across the ceiling to the opposite side of the shop. I have a drop down the wall and to a flex line that goes to either the jointer or planer, a central overhead flex drop to the TS and my work bench, and another drop down to the opposite side to the BS, Sander, Drill press, Chop Saw.
At each drop it reduces to 4" size pipe and I have 6 gates on the system to open and close as needed. I got tired of dragging hoses around and tripping on them so it is all out of the way and the floor space is clear.
It works like a charm and the only issue is remembering to change that bag that is out of sight out of mind. These systems do not work for small tools such as sanders IMO. You need to use a shop vac for those to work well.
Put in a remote for it as well, nice to have it in the pocket and turn it on when needed. You might consider an air compressor in the same space with the DC. Noise reduction is always a good thang!

I have used the Grizzly G1028 for a number of years now with no problems. I upgraded from the filter bags to the pleated canister filter a few years ago and they are definitely better. I most recently upgraded to a 3 HP whole shop cyclone system from Grizzly and ran metal ducting over head throughout my shop. It's definitely better to have more suction than less, which goes a long way in capturing the finer, more harmful dust and the the cyclone prevents the filter from clogging up to quickly which extends the efficiency of your air flow. You will be surprised how fast these units fill and clog up. I don't know what part of the country your in but I currently have this unit (1028)up for sale and am only asking $240.00. It is in excellent condition. The pleated filter is only a few years old and the on /off switch was never used as I had it on a remote switch, so It's only been turned on and off a few times during it's use.
From what I seem to be reading, the Grizzly G 0548Z 2hp with 1 micron canister, seems to fit just about all the needs. It will even allow for possible future ideas, if I decide to include piping.
Has anyone had any experience with this model? Thanks.
I recently added a Delta 1.5hp dust collector to my basement shop. My collector sits about 5 feet higher than the basement floor in a closet built in the adjacent space. I put a cyclone seperator on the shop floor about 6 feet from the collector and ran a series of 4" PVC and flex hose with blast gates to a jointer, table saw, router table with a "wye" for the fence and cabinet and a 10' section of flex hose for the planer and mobile tools. it has great suction for all the tools as long as the other blast gates are closed. A 1.5hp with a cyclone separator would probably work great. I recommend the separator so you don't have to empty the bag every time you use the planer. I would also recommend 220VAC if you can.
Hope this helps.
