I have an old central vacuum system in the garage that is not in use. Can I use it as a duct collection system? I was thinking it would work well for one machine at a time, not hooked up to everything all the time. Any thoughts?
John White, in the article about a new miter saw stand, set up a dedicated shop vac to collect from the saw. I thought the same concept would work with my central vac. The only trouble is that the port on the back of my table saw is 4″ and the port going in to the central vac is 2.5″.
Thanks, John Schaalje.

iffy
My guess would be that the central vac system won't have the "oomph" to handle shop dust collection. Moving sawdust and wood chips requires more air flow and suction than moving dust bunnies.
There's a juge difference between drawing essentially horizontally for a few feet through a shop vac hose and drawing vertically to a ceiling and even horizontally over longer distances..
