I have a Laguna 3hp dust collector that is placed in a separate room due to the noise (this machine is very loud). Several days ago my collector bin reached max capacity and began spewing dust and chips everywhere. Bad on me for not checking to ensure there was available capacity to plane the wood; I simply forgot. So my question is this…. Has anyone figured out an ingenious way to set up an alarm or buzzer of some sort when the collector bin becomes full? It may not be possible, but would sure be nice to have an automated system for this. After cleaning up the mess, I’m simply going into the collector room and checking capacity each day before starting work in the shop. It works, just looking for something better. Thanks in advance.

Onieda makes one.

You can also make your own for about half the price.
I’ve done the same more than once, before and after having a sensor. Not paying close enough attention at the thickness planer has been my issue. I use this one from iVac. Which works quite well.

Thanks. Will give this a look. And yes, the planer is what did me in this time. Thanks.
Thanks. Am going to look into this option.
I understand it may take up valuable floor space - but would a non-opaque drum with cyclone make sense in your shop.
The following Uline drum would be $94 plus shipping

Not sure this would help or how I could integrate into my system with all ducting being under the floor. The collection bin on the collector has a viewing window, but I have to go look at it. Just trying to put a second check in place to avoid the mess if I forget. Thanks for the thought.
Constantly having to visually monitor the bin is not a good solution. When planing, a minute of inattention is enough to clog the cyclone and pack the filter. I sourced the parts used in the Onieda from ebay and amazon and wired it myself for a little more than the cost of Ivac.
I like the large strobing red light as it is impossible to ignore. The IVAC looks like a good value, however the led lights look a bit small, but would probably work well if mounted next to the planer.
Installing a visible alarm vs repeatedly having to clean cyclone and filter is well worth the expense and effort.
Here is a video on how to do it yourself.

The LED’s are surprisingly bright. I have mine located beside the cyclone, which is visible from anywhere in the shop. A nice aspect is that they indicate fill levels. I’ve been caught out by pushing yellow to red. No question, having something to alert to full is better than checking the barrel manually. I’ve never had to deal with a clogged filter, but have packed up the cyclone and ingress pipes a few times. Not fun.
I just use a clear plastic bag on the bottom so I can watch it fill.
