I use a single stage 3 hp system, and set it up outside the shop wall in an adjoining shed. The matter of air quality in my shop should have improved, since the filtered air does not enter the shop air. What are the implications regarding fresh air entry into the shop? Is the use of the unit outside the shop an advantage over purchasing expensive filter cartridges?

In my school we have two shops and the dust collectors for each shop are in hallways and storage area outside of the main shop spaces. I think it is totally better- for many reasons- one- like you say- the filtered air (you can only filter so much) is not being returned to the shop so you are not returning dust laden air into the shop.
two- You don't have to listen to the machine running (I have a light on the wall of the shop which goes on when the unit is on and goes off when the unit is off)- I use remote switches to control it.
three- You don't have to lose floor space to a dust collector.
four- the mess of a dust collector stays out of the shop- and they can be a mess when you are changing bags- believe me!
I am not sure what you are asking when you refer to "the implications of fresh air entry into the shop"- but I want as much fresh air as possible!
Hope that helps-

Hallo, Bob:
Thank you for the answer(s) which are all wonderful.
What I mean by implications re: fresh air intake, when the blower constantly sucks air out of the shop, there has to be provision for air coming in, other=wise the blower motor might have to work harder, to bring air in through cracks in the door or windows. Since most shops have some leakage in walls and doors it may never be a problem.
Thanks again
Albert
