I found that if the sharp edges (at the ends)are taken off the steel bands with a file then the chance of tearing bags is considerably reduced. I did mine six years ago & havn't torn a bag since, & I prefer the quick release action & sealing of the steel bands.
I like the idea of using tape though & will try that.
