Dust Collectors for moderate size shop
I am interested in feed back on dust collection systems out there relative to effectiveness – model/make and cost as related to value received. Also, any difficulties experienced with the equipment and why. Any input before I make a decision would be greatly appreciated.

Buzz, not sure what you're "moderate size shop" is, but for my 1000 sq ft machine area I got a 3hp Oneida. For the collector and all duct work including extra gates for future changes etc, the cost was a little less from $4K. As far as tools go and benefits it has been the best investment I have made. Cleaner air, no scooping of sawdust behind each machine, etc, etc. I opted for the 55 gallon drum vs 35 gallon as it fills up fast.
Oneida designed the system to my tool placement specs, starts out with an 8" trunk reducing to 7" and on down. No clogging, great suction at all machines even with having two gates open.
Purchased the oneida is fall of 2002 and have had no issues whatsoever with the dust collection or design. The only issue I have had is with their X-10 remote controls, worthless. After replacing 3 under warranty I opted for a straight forward magnetic switch on the wall. Besides I kept losing that damn remote through my own ineptness.
Hope this helps, good luck.

My moderate size shop includes, TS, RAS, CS, 6" jointer, DP, Mortiser, shaper, and misc. stuff. 30" x 30" roughly. Made the decision to purchase a JDS after looking at all the bad press Delta iis getting now. Seems much like Troy Built when MTD bought them, Delta being purchased by Black and Decker is going to impact them in a negative way also. Anything to get the bottom line right, and the heck with the custromer.Anyway, I'll let you know what my perspective is when i put it into use. Thanks for the input and response.
Losing the remote is like car keys, it isn't inneptness, it is that dreded disease called CRS.Thanks for the input.
My remote came with two switches. I hung one by the table saw switch (most used tool in the shop) and the other on the wall at the other end of the garage. I'm never more than a couple of steps from one of them.
Buzz,
I had to reply to your message just because of you name. I do not have a dust collection system as of yet (12X18' shop) but I will use Oneida when I do get around to it. I have heard very good things about them.

I recently put in a penn state 1.5 with 1m bags in my shop with 4" pvc pipe to all machines. Total cost around $500. It is effective for my layout which is in a 2 car garage. Machines ts,bs,planer, jointer, drum sander, lathe, chopsaw. I have most of my big dust producers on one side of the shop which is nearest to the collector. Good luck Jeff
I'm not sure what you mean by "moderate", but I'm using a 650 cfm Jet in my 20'x20' garage shop. I made a 'manifold' from 4" HVAC sheet metal ducting and 4" plastic tee's & elbows. The manifold hangs below my work bench/saw outfeed table with flexible lines running to my table saw and band saw. I also have two other ports that I can use when I need to. I have a remote control for the DC with one switch at the table saw and another hanging on the wall at the other end of the garage.
The whole contraption works very well - if I remember to shift the blast gates when I change tools. - lol
If I were doing it over, I would go with an 1100 - 1200 cfm canister system. Right now, I'm thinking of replacing my 30 micron bag with either a 5 micron bag or a canister. I'm also planning on adding a collector above the workbench to get the airborne dust.
I can post some pictures if you're interested.
