Have the 2hp version hooked up tp a surface planer, jointer, table saw and a dust sweep. Blast gates all around and it works great. It's very compact which is why I bought it. Turns out its really quiet. Bought the long ranger which is a must. Simple assembly. Was a little disappointed with the aluminium casting that housed the impellor. It was slightly warped and the bolt holes didn't line up exactly but it didn't affect performance. Had Leeson motor wired 110 and seems to work great. From what I understood it's 100 pct made in America so I gave it a try and am so far pretty happy with it. She's only been sucking dust for two months. What else would you like to know?
Their collector seems awfully expensive, about $175 more than a comparable Jet. Is this premium for the space saving design? I wouldn't mind at all having a DC that "sucks" like a big one, but fits in a significantly smaller footprint.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
The design difference is that dust boy is 2 stage where as the one bag up and one down style are single stage .ie all the dust goes round the turbine on its way to the bag.Not just space saving. In fact I retro fitted my delta 2 stage with a shaker felt bag and it takes as much floor space as 2 jets.
hi jako, what model delta do you have?
It's a 50-181 2hp about 15 years old so it may not be made any longer. If you are contemplating purchase of a system I suggest looking hard at a cyclone.Dust collection isn't as gratifying as tooling but you will enjoy wood working a whole lot more after the initial sticker shock fades
thanx jako, ihave the delt 50-180 1hp, works well, looking por replacement bag, checked delta but norating given. iwonder if a dustboy bag would work? was also wondering about a cnister filter setup to rreplace bag, dont know if it would work, units are really built, going to go w/ 220 in future. called delta , said this type collector is discont, figures right? mi
Talk to the folks at American Fabric Filter Co they will fix you up with the best bag you ever owned!!!!!! (813 991 9400) They will make replacement bags or as I bought an optimised bag which takes up a lot more area but improves the performance no end
Ahhhhh, thank you, I was too hasty in my look-see. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Hi FG ,what kind of dust collector do you use ?Do you have micronic filtration as well
Jako, my DC currently consists of a giant, and ancient, Craftsman 16-Gallon indoor-outdoor vacuum. What I have my eye on is the new Jet with the bag below and canister filter on top (DC-1100CK or 1200CK). Have you seen it?

Not likely to be able to afford any more $$ -- this one runs around $450, give or take. I like the filtration ability and easy clean and disposal characteristics.
By "micronic" filtration, I assume you mean an air filter? I may actually purchase that before I get the DC -- the shavings and sawdust that fall on the floor are a pain in the rear, but it's the super-fine stuff that causes the worst respiratory problems, and I like the idea of filtering all the air in the shop in a short cycle.

Hi FG I know nothing of this machine ,but looking at the specs it looks great .We have a large cyclone 7hp at the shop which has multiple fabric "sock"filters above The problem we have is pine shavings from the 12" jointer and 20 " planer (8"duct) won't drop in the cyclone and then go up and jam up the socks.Everything is grounded etc.If this happened to your cartridge what then?I'm not trying to rain on your picnic but could you clean it out? This does not happen with hard woods but only with large ,soft, light pine shavings.
Jako, take a look (below) at the pic again...see that "handle" on top, looks like abbreviated floppy bunny ears? That turns a flapper inside the canister which, when activated by yours truly, would knock the waste out of the filter. Should work with the shavings that creep up there too, unless they are wet I suppose.View Image forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Not only did I not notice the handle, but I didn't read the description properly either.I'm just so brassed off with ours which has a shaking mechanism and it still jambs up that I am very suspicious. It requires climbing up a step ladder as the top is 10 ' in the air! I get a fair amount of transfer of shavings into the bag on the delta as well.It always seems to be pine.Must be my magnetic personality or static cling . :-)
FG, My buddy just put the new Jet in his shop. He says its too loud & he may have to relocate it to an insulated closet. I only saw it before it was hooked up. It looked great but I know he's disappointed. I don't know if how it compares to others in db's, but I know he prefers not to turn it on.
Hugh
What DC was he using previously? I've never used one of any kind, but understand that "loud" is part of their personality. With the current configuration of my shop, I probably could locate it outside and still reach all my tools. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I have the 2HP DustBoy. I've had it for 5 years or so, and I really like it. The only drawback to it... and it's common with all dust collectors, is that the high-filtration bag smothers it. Since buying it, I moved to a larger shop, and have the dust collector in an external room where I use a regular bag, and that's a lot better. The folks that compare this thing to the Chinese dust collectors have likely not seen a DustBoy. HEAVY duty cast aluminum impeller... Heavy duty all the way around. Nice piece of equipment!
Recommended! (Although it IS pricey.)
WW,
I also have the 2hp DB which came with a 1 micron bag. I almost seems like no air comes through the bag. Would you recommend that I change it I'm in a basement shop. It still works good but I get the feeling it could be alot better. What about those metal filters.
Mark
I think if I were in a basement shop, I'd stick with the high-filtration bag... but I sure know what you mean about the machine's suction with that bag on. Look at it this way, though... You're in a closed area, and you need the high-filtration... a lesser machine would be hard to imagine at that level of filtration. At least when the bag is clean, you're getting moderately good suction... with high filtration.
But... on the other hand, the regular bags are inexpensive. You could try one, and maybe couple it with an ambient air cleaner (like the JDS units) and maybe you'd get the same results.
Lots of Luck,
Jeff
Yeah. Where on the same page.
thanks
I've seen arguments that say that the higher filtration bags , like 1 mic actually provide better airflow than the 30 mic bags. The idea is that the holes in the bag may be smaller but there are many more of them. It nets out to more airflow. I was surprised to read that at first. I noticed a distinct improvement in my Delta 1.5 hp collector after going to an oversided felt 1 mic top bag and lining the lower bag with a heavy duty plastic bag.
I'm not an engineer, but just relating what I have read and experienced.
Good luck
