Hi
I need some kind of advice here. I have a basement shop, and I am at the point of getting a dust collector to keep things cleaner than it is now (I had a shop-vac…)
I know that the dust collector will swallow wood chip and I think it will also get some fine sanding dust (or will it not ???) But my question is : Do I need to get a air cleaner thing, and how does that work???
I do general woodworking, and some copy-lathe work, and this is while sanding on the lathe that thing get nasty… and the good wife will be nasty soon enough…..
Thanks
Bob in Sherbrooke, Province of very cold Québec…..

Hi Bob, There have been lots of threads on dust collection here recently read them all ,re cyclones etc. Yes you need dust collection ,micro-dust filtration and a mask there was a site mentioned here Bill's Cyclone and Dust Collection Which you may find useful(it was a very recent posting).Sanding dust is the most destructive to you. However you need to think about the total system
I recently read where an air cleaner was made by using an attic vent fan and furnace filters. The individual made a 4 sided box with double air filters (back to back) and placed the fan on the top of the box. The filters ranged from .5 to 3 micron and can be cleaned by blowing them with air or using a vacuum.
Attic vent fans are fairly inexpensive, cheap to operate, move a lot of air and are reasonably quiet. It was stated that the box could be hung or set on a table/stand.

Bob,
I have not figured out all the details of controlling dust yet but I did do the furnace filter thing and it has made a big improvement. I have several old box fans (about 20x20) one of which hangs from the rafter over the lathe. On that box fan I built a simple frame which allows me to swap out and clean the filter. For an air cleaner to be effective, you need about 10 turns per hour of the air in the room. The box fan is more than adequate for my small shop space.
I also took the floor attachment (wide scoop)for the shop vac and mounted that in such a way to suck chips and dust from work on the lathe...works better with the dust than the chips...but helps quite a bit.
When sanding stock I wear a mask..and am thinking about a down draft table... good luck with your issues..
You will definitely need both a collector and an air cleaner. However good your DC is, it's not going to get even close to collecting everything that comes off of a given machine, and it's the small, light particles that cause the biggest problems in the house (and in your lungs). I'd venture to guess that, could you only get one of the two right now, the air cleaner will have the biggest impact.
