Good evening. I have the DW 733 planer and have been using it for several years with no trouble or complaints. Been doing a great job. But….it has started to be very difficult to lower it below 1 inch. and the lower I go, the harder it gets to turn the crank. It is also just as hard to raise it once I have it lowered. I removed the cover shell and cleaned up the four “guide posts” with scotch bright pad and that helped a great deal, for a while. Now the problem has returned and cleaning the guide posts doesn’t seem to help. Reluctant to put any lube on the guide posts as I think they would quickly be gummed up with dust from the planing. Could find nothing in the manual or on th web site, so here I am. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks, Spencer in Tallahassee

I think your best bet is to contact Dewalt at the following # 1~800~433~9258
and explain your problem to the factory service people, maybe they can help..

I had the same problem not so very long ago. I couldn't crank the head any lower than about 1/2". What I found my problem to be was that a piece of a knot off the end of a board I had planed earlier had lodged back up inside the housing between the posts and was preventing the head from lowering any further than the 1/2". I'd check again and look for a piece that's jammed up inside the housing. That could be the culprit.
Thanks for the help and suggestions. Nothing stuck under the head. Used the vacuum and compressed air to clean it out. Then called the Dewalt 800 number and found that I have type 1 planer that doesn't need the round nuts and spring washers on the two threaded "lift" screws: the two long threaded gizmoes that move the cuttng head, to one of which the crank handle is attached. After removing the round nuts and spring washers, the head moves with no resistance, other than the spring around the posts. Thanks again, Spencer.
