I recently watched a video by Marc Spagnuolo about reducing blotching in woods like birch, maple and cherry. His solution was to apply shellac to the wood and then apply a gel stain. It seemed to work very well.
I am looking into dying some birch plywood; if I apply dye, the blotches will apparently show. Can a very light coat of shellac be applied before the dye? It seems unlikey the dye will penetrate the coat of shellac. I may have to use a gel stain, but I hate to forgo the flexibility of dye. Has anyone investigated this?

I have used his Pre-Color Conditioner and have had good results with blotch control in plywood and mahogany. His website is

and somewhere in there he has a video on how to use it. Be patient, he does like to talk.

PS His concentrate is NOT a powder, just less water. I wish he would supply a powder because I hate to pay for shipping water!
BTW
I use water-based dyes from Lockwood and like the ability to control final color with a non-toxic solvent.
