Hello ww’ers!
Does anyone know a good source for eagle patera designs/photos? I’ve been to both public libraries and university ones here in San Francisco, and haven’t been able to find any good pics in federal furniture books.
I’ve created a few copies of Rob Millard’s eagles with the help of his video (which I recommend HIGHLY!), but am looking for new designs/challenges.
Thanks!
Rob

Rob,
Montgomery's American Furniture: The Federal Period has detail photos of inlays: bandings and paterae. There are a couple eagles illustrated there. The book may be hard to find, as it has been out of print for a while. Your library's interlibrary loan program might be an option for finding it.
Interestingly, the placement of the arrows in the eagle's right foot supposedly indicates production of the piece during time of war, olive branch in right foot, peace. Also # of stars in the banner that frequently accompanies the eagle may indicate the # of states in the union at the time of production.

Thanks Ray; that's great trivia! Love your work, btw...
Rob Millard also sent me a few other books which I haven't managed to find, yet:
- American Furniture with Related Decorative Arts 1660-1830, ISBN 1-55595-068-X Has one photo of a nice eagle in the horizontal orientation.
- Treasures of State Fine and Decorative Art in the Diplomatic Reception Rooms of the U.S. Department of State. ISBN0-8109-3911-8
- There are some eagle photos in the 10 Volume set of books titled American Antiques from the Israel Sack Collection.
I'm sure this should keep me busy for a while!
Rob
