I’m using eastern red cedar for an indoor cabinet and was wondering how long it takes to turn from it’s original purple/red color to the aged brownish red color. Is there anything that will speed up this color change? Will tung oil slow down the color change? Thanks for all replies.

Dawn,
I am not aware of any time studies that have been done, so I can't answer that question. However, you can speed up the process by exposing the stock to direct sunlight or "suntanning".
Tung oil has no UV blockers so I doubt that it would slow the aging process.
I will caution you though, Eastern Red Cedar
i does
become very brittle with age.
Perhaps Jon will drop by and give a more definitive answer.

*Dawn,I would be very cautious about applying anything to the cedar if we're talking about the inside of a closet. An oil finish will not give your closet a particluarly good smell for a long time. Plus, if you are using cedar in a closet in order to protect clothing from moths, you might well cancel out the cedar aroma from doing its job.FWIWthe rev
