Okay, I just don’t get it. Why would anyone buy a new L-N plane (4 1/2 high frog) on Ebay for $15 more than L-N sells it direct? For that matter, why would anyone buy something that is almost new from an unknown person on Ebay (for which they don’t have the backing of the original manufacturer) for 85% or more of the price of a new one?

most times its cheaper for foreign folks to buy on ebay rather than in country.
Guess that's the way things go at auctions, both live, and online. Sometimes one finds a genuine bargin, but so many times it seems the prices are way out of line. Maybe the competitive spirit kicks in and common sense disappears.(?)

BTW I notice Steve Knight regularly offers planes for sale on Ebay, but I'm not sure if they're discounted or not.
Ebay is like any auction. You have to know what an item costs before you bid on it. A friend at a 4th of July party was talking about a friend of hers who buys things at the dollar store and ebays them. Makes pretty good money at it I guess.
People often pay more for things at auction then they would anywhere else. Easy to get competitive and keep bidding until you get it. If you avoid this temptation, auctions are great.
I've gotten some good deals on tools off ebay, but I shop brand names, know what they cost new, and figure shipping into the total cost. I usually bid on 20 items before I get what I'm after.
Start by figuring out what you want, research prices, then look what's on ebay, look at completed items to see what the least such items have gone for recently, if that's a good price try to get the item for that price, but be careful of hidden shipping charges and who the seller is before bidding. Then be patient and bid on that tool until you get it.
Love ebay, but I've gotten way more money then things were worth on a couple of my auctions. And gotten burned by bidding for things that were a good price, but I really didn't need, or forgetting that tools are heavy, and the shipping is gonna cost a bunch.
OH my god.. My favorite pet peeve..
I can't understand the prices that people pay for used L-N.. I would get it if the item was no longer manufactured/collector item.. I can't see why I would want to make a bid for a L-N plane that is only $10 to $15 dollars less than L-N sells it for.. When I buy it from L-N the item is new and I know exactly what I buying..
OK.. I will jump off my soapbox now..
Just another example of my favorite bumper sticker:
Stupidity should be painful!
I have given up on finding a good deal at an auction around here (Central NY) because people do not know the worth of the tools. Heard from a reliable source about a well used Delta 15 inch planner going for $10 less than what it was selling for NEW in the WW store across the road from the auction. Saw a cheap beat up bench mounted table saw, without a fence or miter guage go for $75 when Delta's cheapest, and a better saw, goes for $99 with a 2 yr warranty. Go figure.

Saw a posting some time back about an E-bay sale of an EMPTY BOX for a large LN scraper plane. For $50! Plainly stated, "Box Only." The guy posting wanted to know if there's something he should know. Yeah--there's one born every minute, and two born to take it way from him.
