Walnut is often recommended because of its similar grain structure. A aniline dye is likely to be the most effective and versatile. In very concentrated form it will penetrate and make a deep black. If less concentrated, it can darken but leave a bit a figure showing through. If you want a pure black with no figure showing through you can use India ink which has a very fine pigment that will be virtually opaque.
