I purchased a wen 4212 variable speed a couple years back. It's not winning any awards but it has done everything I've needed it to do. Dialing back the speed for large fostner bits was my primary reason for the variable speed version.
I'm watching this thread with anticipation. Mostly curious if one can get a small drill press that doesn't have much wobble so the holes are more true to size.
I have had reasonable success using the Bosch PBD 40 drill press since it came on the market. It has some nice features and is easy to move around the shop. My main complaint has been with the keyless chuck that on occasion will not fully tighten and the bit spins creating some spalling on the shank. It is possible some of this was due to me asking too much from the machine. I would like to think that Bosch has maybe made some improvements over the years as well. I am a serious hobbyist and build a wide variety of projects, mostly in hardwoods. I have drilled mortises, used a variety of Forstner bits etc without ruining material or bits beyond some minor file touch-ups. Although I have not measured the runout it has met my needs for accuracy. What sold me on the drill press to begin with was the combination of functionality and value. In my opinion this would make an excellent drill press to start with simply due to its ease of use, portability, variable speed and depth control. (joeleonetti - I have not experienced any wobble durng use).
thx, i looked into this a bit. i am in the usa, west coast, and it appears that i would need to order from europe?
I’ll be watching this thread also. I can’t seem to find a source for the Bosch PBD 40 drill press here in the U.S. I’m also curious if it can be made compatible with 115V or 220V power outlets here.
