   knife shapening

   If you intend to only sharpen knives, I recommend the SOG Knife Sharpener from Garrett Wade.  It is on the order of $25 plus shipping and does a great job on pocket knives, kitchen knives and meat cleavers.  Plus it does not use electricity and is so simple and easy to use that we sharpen our knives much more frequently than before.

   harbor freight sharpener

   I build the Edgemaster Model 400 belt sharpener and just want to enter my opinion regarding using the little sander people talk about from Harbor Freight.

   The Edgemaster Model 400 was built with a year of trying several different set-ups.  I settled on the horizontal machine because I felt that the vertical sharpening of a knife was very dangerous, especially to the novice sharpener. 

   With a horizontal plane to work on while sharpening it allows a much better look at what you are doing.  You can watch the burr form and move from one side to the other.  In my instruction book I warn the buyer no less than 4 times that you should never sharpen an item with the sharp edge toward the operator.  Just to prove my point, I purposely turned a knife the WRONG WAY and sharpened it until it caught on the belt.  The force of the belt moving threw the knife across the garage with huge force.

   I am against the vertical machine for that reason.  But just sending someone down to buy a cheap machine is leaving them open to personal body damage. 

   Further, my sharpeners sharpen form 100 to 400 knives a day.  They can't do it all with a little pull through and do a great job.

   I feel that I, like you, have a right to my opinion and this is mine.
