As upcoming job requires me to use white melamine coated particle board as shelving, with a strip of 3/4 by 3/4 oak applied to the visible edges
I intend to cut the edging slightly oversize, to put a 1/4″ groove in the edge of the board and the strip and fit a loose 1/4″ ply tenon to locate the strip during gluing and strengthen the joint
Now comes the problem, I will then need to trim the strip until it is flush with the board, but ideally without damaging the surface of the melamine. I can get close with a bearing guided cutter on my router but will still need to sand the strip afterwards, and don’t want to spoil the surface of the melamine. Is there a better way or do I just need to be really careful
TIA, John

I would mill the facing for a perfect fit and glue and clamp. I would also finish the piece before applying. Melamine doesn't deserve too much more attention.
John,
I have made several pieces with Melamine panels and wood trim. The best success I have had is as follows:
Good luck,
