great story
Funny how doing business with the people you want to stay in business comes full circle, eh?
Buying on the cheep almost always ends up costing more in time and waste.
Walmart Should Be NEXT !
>Buy American made when ever possible<
Even if it costs more.
About damb freekin' time !
and further more . . .
Where I work I don't think I have convinced one person to stop buying at Walmart but that is NEXT !
Walmart goes to the American business and strangles them until they are forced to go off shore to meet Walmart's price demands after Walmart builds the supplier's company up so far the business has no choice but meet the price point or loose huge .
One of the few things my employer and I agree on is the negative impact of Walmart on American business/employment.
Exactly
How can we ever repay the national debt to China, when the only jobs left are part-time minimum-wage jobs at Walmart?
We have China over the barrel, not the other way around. They have dollars that are worthless unless they can buy something wiith them, like our public debt. Remember the old saying, along the lines of:. If you owe the bank $1,000 it owns you, but if you owe the bank $1,000,000,000 you own it. Shoot, if push came to shove, we could just cancel debt owed to foreigners. They might not lend to us in the future, but they don't vote.
'aaaaaI I I I dnnnnO
I keep having visions of China knocking on the door, mine or America's (same dif) and saying "OK if you aren't going to pay us what you owe us then we are going to have to forclose ".
Basically the Chinese saying "Ahhh America. Nice country. Since we own it now we think we will all live here now. Where are all of you Americans living next week ?" Not enough room here for all of us. ? So sorry.
China's problem is that is has more dollars than it can find uses for. That's what export surpluses are about. Thus, they have to find ways to use dollars that is more profitable that pulping them up to use for insulation. US public bonds, despite the idiotic down grades by S&P, remain and will remain, the most secure investment in the World. Of course, other than in hyperbole, sovereign debt can't be foreclosed, nor can China work changes on US immigration policy. I used to speak to securities rating analysts from the agencies and was not impressed by their depth of knowledge.
Of course China could attempt to militarily invade the US--which it could attempt with or without owning any US debt. Naturally, likelihood of success at such an invasion is nil since US military is dramatically superior in all respects except total manpower.
It is quite nice for US taxpayers that China still want to buy bonds at such low interest rates. Of course this is another aspect of benefit US consumers receive since Chinese manufacturers are willing to sell us goods at low prices. If proper fiscal and monetary stimulation, along with incentives to invest in promising endeavors, can restore employment levels, having such trade is a win-win.
Great going gang !
It is a very good thing that is happening here and I am by no means any kind of "Community organizer". But a little motivation can start a trend and you guys are making it happen, this Country needs this.
A note to Our internationl Western culture Friends. I'm not trying in any way to be an erogant self serving American. But it is past time to clean all of our houses and get our ecconomies rolling.
Chris, Thank you ! It is your generation as well as others that can get'r done. Thanks for joining the "Party"
While this can certainly create American jobs, the magnitude of the creation is not easily calculated with a back of envelope type calculation, unless your envelope includes a sophisticated input-output matrices.. For example, if you spend more on the made in USA items, you will have to spend less somewhere else. But some of that reduced spending my hurt employment in other US industries. For example, if you cut back on eating out, local waitresses, cooks, and bus boys would be out of jobs.
Ripple down effects
There is that possibility. But I do feel that if this type of movement happens there will be more disposeable income. My wife and I eat out fairly often and have cut back on the menue options. Which probably doesn't hurt their business much at all. We are also now purchasing much more outside of the BORG's and supporting local merchants.
Every little bit will help.
If a few extra dollars spent on made in USA building materials and tools can have a big positive effect, a few dollars no longer spent on made in USA a restaurant meals can have a big negative effect. I can't say which effect would be bigger without real data and serious analytical tools that take the big bucks to develop.
but then
at the same time those manufacurers are putting more people to work(in a perfect scenario) and then they have more money to spend(perhaps eating out- at restuarants)- your government gets more money fronm taxes to spend.. if there is more money being put into your economy it should be a +. your only real negative is that whatever that you may export may drop
ron
ABC piece.
What a great piece David put together. I try and try to buy American goods, the problem is I never seem to find the Made in China label until I open the package or box. Company names that sound All American can be the worst offenders. It would be great to have a list of woodworking tools and products made in America too. This could spread to other lists of products having to do with other hobbies.
Pushing USA
If enough people keep pushing USA products it can be a Nation wide reality.
Provided the Box stores don't lobby Washington, But I don't think that could squelch a determined America.
Hot dogs, baseball, apple pie and Chevrolet.
In 1996 I bought a new Camaro Z28 with a Corvette engine in it. Drove that thing of beauty for ten years. What could be more American than that? Somewhere along the line I discovered that it was made in Canada.
Was this an American product? I guess so, but sometimes it's hard to tell. The DeWalt router bits I bought years ago were all made in Israel.
In 1969 Sony, of all companies, thought that sales in America would be hurt if people found out they were a Japanese company and ran into trouble here when the very, very little "Made in Japan" labels that were hidden on the product ran afoul of US customs law and shipments were being sent back to Japan.
As I posted here once before, a few months ago I made a pair of mallets out of plumbing Ts. I turned the handles and wood faces on the lathe and threaded them into the Ts. As I was turning one of them over in my hands, admiring my work I saw it... CHINA cast into the plumbing T... Gaaaaa! Even my homemade tools are made in China !
May I Have Somemore Please ?
>My hyperbole<
and
>sovereign debt can't be foreclosed, nor can China work changes on US immigration policy.<
Ah ! Thank God !
That was a close one ( hyperbole wise ).
: )
What the well dressed woodworker is wearing next year
I just saw this on The Associated Press :
The Allen Edmonds Shoe Corp., whose high-end shoes have been worn by U.S. presidents for generations, is preparing to open stores in China while keeping the manufacturing work at home. The plan marks a reversal of sorts in a footwear industry that has flowed almost entirely from East to West.
Nearly 99 percent of shoes sold in the U.S. are imported, with China accounting for about 88 percent of the total, according to a report by the American Apparel & Footwear Association.
Allen Edmonds is hoping to become a larger player in the world market. So the Wisconsin-based shoe company announced Tuesday it has signed a licensing agreement with a Shanghai-based company to sell its shoes in China, Hong Kong and Macau. The first store is slated to open in Shanghai by the end of June.
End AP
Ho !
Guess what I am wearing as I type this .
My trusty Allen Edmonds !
dresses woodworker is wearing next year it worked for Eddie Izzard, why not?
OOOOOOPS
>dresses<
One little letter. I am blaming it on the spell check. Yahhhh that's the ticket. It was the spell check.
Hey what da'ya want; it was four in the morning when I woke up on the couch and looked on the AP to see if the world was still there. No reason going back to bed if it isn't. Right ? Or maybe that is the best time to go back to bed. Nice and quiet.
Shoes
I can think of a few large large shoe mfg's of past times. Endicot-Johnson near Binghamton NY, there was one in Ravenna OH and another in Lebanon OH. that went back to the civil war era. And not to forget the one that led tto the Battle of Gettysburg.
Exactly. I'm going to buy a pair of Allen Edmonds shoes to wear in the shop - right after the Travertine Marble floor is installed. ;-)
But, I need to find an appropriately-soft brush for the Festool dust extractor to suck the sawdust from the little holes in the wing-tip.
Dust In My Little Holes Is Always So Irksome
>sawdust from the little holes in the wing-tip.<
You have that trouble too ?
I thought it was just me. Caused by using blades that are too fine or too slow a feed rate maybe. For a while I was sure it was caused by the type of sharpening stones I am using. I must admit to having to give that one up as complete fantasy. Though there are days . . .
Hey lookie at these dudes

Helps keep the saw dust from going in the top of the shoe. Five stars ! I'm going for it !
Errrr . . . harrumph . . . harrumph . . . that is to say . . . I shall instruct Charles, my valet, to lay in a few pair.
I may as well have Charles introduce himself and show you around. I haven't arisen from my bed chambers or had my shower yet. I shall receive you shortly.

While in The City I go by "Mr. Ford" I'm sure you can understand.
I would appreciate it if you didn't mention the town home to Queenmasteroftheuniverseandbabybunnytrainer. That would never do; no indeed; that would NEVER do. I am afraid I must be most emphatic and insistent on that point. You understand.
?
Gooood.
The Dalton
That's the style I was considering, as well. Now, I just need to find a good source for lizardskin spats. ;-)
This may interest you and others.
