I need to attach a 22 inch shelf to a 1″ rail and must accomadate for wood (cherry) movement. Does anyone have a suugestion how I can elongate the holes? My drill bit won’t cut sideways

You don't need a side-cutting endmill. Instead of tryint to cut by moving the bit laterally, try moving it side to side on an angle. You will remove material on one side with one angle move and on the other with the opposite move. You don't need a lot of space for wood movememnt and this angular movement should give you enough.

Thanks Forrest. I've used that method before but not on 1" stock. Maybe I'm over thinking this but with a rail that thick I'm wondering if the lateral movement leaves an X pattern with little or no material removed from the middle.
