Good morning everyone,
After reading an earlier post with regard to Roy Underhill and The Woodwrights Shop, I felt compelled to find out what is going on. I sent email to UNC (University of North Carolina) and they graciously gave me Roys email address.
I can’t get the show as we don’t get the local New Hampshire PBS station. Since then I discovered that if I get a second dish (Dish Network), I should be able to get it, so am on to it.
Anyway, I emailed Roy and he replied. I hope I’m not overstepping my bounds but wanted to share some highlights of his response:
There’s a stack of those first Fine Woodworkings from 1 to ?? down in the basement. I run into some of the editors every now and then, but I was not aware of the Knots forum. I’ll check it out.
We are going to have a discussion soon about streaming the shows online, so you could watch over the net. Oh brave new world!
Great News!
Regards,
Bob @ Kidderville Acres

Roy's show is not available on any of the PBS broadcast outlests in the Washington D.C. or Baltimore area. It is on a digital cable channel under Maryland Public Television for Children! i have e-mailed MPT and can not get an answer etc. from them about broadcast viewing. Thanks for following up on this. Webcast would be great.
Dan,
I was most impressed when he replied to my question. He also said:
Hi Bob,I'm so sorry you can't see the show now. We have had some great guests and seen some wonderful things! The show is free to all PBS stations, so if they want to run it, they can. I try to disguise my voice when I call the stations, but they still know it's me when I call.

Maybe we should start a Woodwright's Shop Fan Club to help promote the show. Create a website and have people join and solicist PBS stations around the country to show how popular he really is.
One of the problems with The Woodwright's Shop is that if you're not a woodworker (as most PBS programmers are) you think the show is completely useless because Roy doesn't use any power tools but, true woodworkers find his show very entertaining and helpful. PBS stations will air The New Yankee Workshop three times a week and not even bother with WWS because they don't understand the show.
His email indicated to me he didn't know about Knots and he said he'd check it out. Don't be surprised if he posts. That makes me glad I went through the effort to contact him.
It would be most gratifying to me. Also, I wonder who he's talking with about on-line streaming content, FWW maybe?

It's possible he may be talking to http://www.thewoodworkingchannel.com .... old The American Workshop episodes air on the site....maybe he's thinking the same thing...It would be AWESOME if he posted on this forum..
Did you see the post WW TV Shows posted by BruceS? He's trying to start a grass roots action to get something going with the PBS'es around the country. My cohorts up here have sent about 30 emails to our local PBS.
It wouldn't surprise me if he did post something in here. That would surely make my day! Thanks for the interest and your comments.

Roy should take a gander at the Wood Whisperer site. He does a nice job with his podcast. I'm an admirer of Roy but I doubt there is enough interest in his show to get it back onto most PBS stations or commercial stations. I haven't watched it in years and have no interest in seeing it. Not my cup of tea.
