Good afternoon Forestgirl,
OK, I give up. What ads ? Geez, seems like I'm alway's the last one to find out/get something ! LOL. Seriously though, I have been going through some recent threads and don't see the ads. Maybe my employer's server/firewall is blocking them or the "hosts file" on my pc is blocking them. Either way, I am ad free! (don't ask me how the hosts file works, I have a general idea but a better explanation can be found by Googling "hosts file". I do know it eliminates a lot of ads on web sites though).
If the ads are fairly onobtrusive they probably wouldn't bother me. I read most of the ads in FWW and FHB anyway. If they were there from day one, we probably wouldn't mind because it is such a great site and we are only offended because they are showing up now. I'm sure it costs a lot of money to maintain this site and the reduced rate subcribers to FWW pay I think is a bargain. Just my 2 cents worth.
Cheers,
Bruce
Hi, Bruce. I'll have to find some software that blocks them, mine only blocks pop-ups. I've always been cognizant of the high cost of running a site such as Knots. But these ads are not unobtrusive -- they're right in the threads, even in-between 2 posts, not just at the end of the thread. Please, someone, name me another worthwhile woodworking forum that finds it necessary to hit us with this kind of advertising.
I'm getting incredibly sick of Google. Almost as much as I am sick of eBay showing up with every key stroke. Enough already.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
forestgirl- if you find an add blocker- don't stop there- look for a "rude post" blocker and a "can't stay on the topic" blocker and a "just like to start a fight with a not even close to witty comments" blocker. Now that something I'll buy :-)Dave
"..."rude post" blocker and a "can't stay on the topic" blocker and a "just like to start a fight with a not even close to witty comments" blocker." Wow, you don't want much do you?!!! ROFL!!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Strange, I don't get those.
Girl,
Iam tempted to send protesting emails to all those Knotters who have nothing else to worry about but a couple of the least intrusive Internet site ads I ever saw. The email would go something like this:
Worse things happen at sea (and also on land).
Lataxe, a durable consumer.

You have good taste in music! Stand Up is one of my all time favorites.------------------------------------

No kidding!
I've been whistling "Bouree" since it came out. Have you got the re-mastered CD? "Reasons for Waiting" is breathtaking.
"Stand Up" is an absolute all time classic. Kudos to you for recognizing the line!
It's buried in the 400 disc changer, it gets played a lot but I don't see it often! I don't think mine is re-mastered. What label put it out was it still Chrysalis?------------------------------------

You know I'll have to get back to you on that one. Its at the shop and I won't get back there until tomorrow.
You got back to me pretty quick. No real life to speak of?
Oh yeah, the CD I have has a couple of extra tracks on it."Minstrel in the Gallery" is one of them I think.
You must have been a pretty"hep cat" if you twigged onto J.T. so quick. I was introduced by a friend's older brother. If I had to pick the moment the downward spiral into dissolution began, that might be it.
The "Thick as a Brick" tour was one of the first big concerts I saw and ranks right up there as one of the better ones.
The thought of the strobe towards the end of the show still throws me into seizures.
Computer in the shop!
The Aqualung tour was the first Tull concert I saw. Tried never to miss one. I'm pretty sure I don't have the remaster and would much appreciate knowing what label it was on when you get a chance. There's been a few other concerts that have put me in a similar place, Moody Blues, the Dire Straits Brothers in Arms concert and some of the early ELO shows.------------------------------------

Mr Green.
I brought the Tull CD back from the shop and it is a re-issued, re-mastered version. It was also released by Chrysalis as you thought. Believe it or not I ordered it from the audiophiles Wal-Mart - HMV.
The added tracks are "Living in the Past",(appropriately enough), "Driving Song" and Sweet Dream". It also has new liner notes by Mr. Anderson. He has a fine sense of humour.
And oh yeah. Have you caught my act over in the "Thread Ads" post? Even I have to admit I may have breached decorum just a little with that "goose-stepping" take, but hey, what decent world power hasn't goosed stepped a little now and then?
Okay. What evil world power?
Anyways, Latexman or whatever he calls himself really has his knickers in a knot - Ha! Thats a good one!
Its amazing how quickly these Forums can turn into a pre-schoolers word usage excercise.
Moi aussi.
Much appreciated! I will have a look around and see if I can procure a copy. I have been watching the other thread, I have little room to critique as I have never been one to shy away from using a 1000 pounder just because a grenade would do! Lataxe really is a fine fellow and normally quite hard to provoke. Perhaps he is out of sorts becuse the poodle received a lateral promotion rather than the tar and feathering he so richly deserved. Trade a few posts with him and I think you will find him an endearing character well worth corresponding with.------------------------------------

Good catch. I thought I was being stupidly obscure (and way off topic). It was a good one, wasn't it? I'm lucky to have a copy from before they did away with the fold out/pop-up on the inside (the inside spread was pretty to look at, but impossible to clean your pot on). The James Grashow woodcut illustration is truly a thing of beauty. If memory serves, he did a very nice Yardbirds cover also. And the Burt Silverman Aqualung cover was just magnificent. I loved all the early stuff, but sadly, drifted away around the Heavy Horses era.
Here's a little eye candy for your screen. Hope you have broadband!------------------------------------

Ahhh. Seems like yesterday.
I agree that if Taunton needs to have them to keep the free access website...so be it. They ARE easy to ignore, I find. And to the Tull fans..Great album! The first concert I ever went to was Jethro Tull at the old Rhode Island Auditorium in '69 (or was it '68?). They were doing the last of the Stand Up concerts with a few songs from the new Aqualung thrown in. The warm up group was an up-and-coming Santana! $4.50!!! Thanks for the memories!!!DWW

For someone who has posted hundreds of times quoting from catalog descriptions of tools, you do not exactly occupy the moral high ground in your protest of advertising.
What, exactly, are you trying to achieve with your PROTEST (sic) campaign? That Taunton not allow any advertising in the forum? Would that benefit anyone? How would it benefit you?
Surely you have the ability, as a functioning human being, to ignore those things that do not appeal to you and to embrace those that do. What is it that is so frightening to you about Taunton's introduction of advertising in the forum?
If advertising brings together a willing buyer and a willing seller, how is that bad? There is no requirement that you be either.
I am not with you on this one. The ad occupies "three or four" lines worth of space between the 1st and 2nd thread on each page. You can skip over them with a click of the mouse or a tap of the spacebar. A Yahoo forum that I participated in began randomly posting full screen ads that you had to click through to get to the desired link. You had to wait until the page loaded (the button loaded last) and you had to scroll down to get to the button. They were forcing you to look at the ad.
It is costly to run a forum. Administration is a nightmare and time demands are great. What would happen to our community if they began charging us to cover the costs? I would think if we were given the choice these ads would win out over a fully paid forum. Two photography forums that I participated in for years were sold and a subscription fee was imposed. $125 for one, and $249 for another. These were great forums with worldwide participation. I didn't join either.
I think the dynamic at work here is our status quo was disturbed without asking us. Instead of inciting others to complain on day one, why not give it a try for a month and then offer a better way for FWW to get what they need?

It appears these ads can be easily and silently killed by the Adblock Plus plugin for Firefox. Just set it to block googlesynidcation.com.https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865Pete

Thanks. I don't use Firefox much, but I will switch over to it for viewing to see how effective this is.Greg

I installed it, but the ads are still there. Could that be because I am using a Mac?********************************************************

Firefox does automated updates on my machine and recently dropped in a new "filter set". I wasn't really sure what it was but it seems that mystery has now been cleared up.I don't get the ads here nor any of the site text formatting either. I do still get both at FHB.
Looks like the ads come in on more than one name. As someone else mentioned, the "subscription" setup will probably kill all of them. Also, adblock takes wildcards, so you can add a filter for:http://*.googlesyndication.com/* (this is the text, not a link to click on)Pete

Thanks for the tip. Works like a charm. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
FG, I must respectfully disagree with you. The ads ARE unobtrusive.
Your post reminds me of a story I heard about a band staying at a hotel. There was some noise coming from elsewhere in the hotel. It was annoying enough to keep one band member awake most of the night. The next morning, he complained to his fellow bandmate "did you hear all that noise last night?" The mate responded "Didn't hear a thing -- I came here to SLEEP, not listen!" ;-)
I noticed the ads (barely) when they first showed up. Now, I have to look for them or I don't even see 'em. When responding to the other ad thread, I didn't know without looking if they showed up on every thread or where in the thread they showed up. My guess is that, if you and others can stop fixating on them, you'll forget they are there as well.
I, for one, am willing to put up with some ads if it means TP can afford to keep this site free. In response to your request that we send e-mail to TP about the ads, I sent the following -- I hope others send in messages of support as well:
I think this is a fine site. It does not bother me in the least to have subtle ads on the site. Please continue to provide this excellent, free, resource, even if it means posting ads.

OK, OK, I give, I give. I'll learn to ignore them also. Best if a change like that is instituted after Ive had a couple cups of coffee, LOL.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
FG, The first ad I saw torqued me 'cause it appeared to me that the poster had placed the ads. But once I realized it was the handiwork of Taunton, my attitude was tempered. Just another ad to ignore. A quick flick of the scroll wheel and it's gone. No software to buy. No tinkering with the computer. Just a flick of the ol' pointy finger. ;^)
You are generally a voice of reason here, but not this time. You must admit that of the things that are truely important these days, these ads ain't one of 'em. And, if the ads help keep the lights on at Taunton..............
Oh! One more thing. Could someone direct me to those coffin ads? I think I'm gonna need one soon. NYUK! NYUK!
ONWARD! THROUGH THE FOG.
Chuck
