Bill, the pine you're probably looking for is Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris), the wood commonly used in English cottage furniture. It's been widely planted as a cultivar here in North America, so you can sometimes find the wood at small saw mills.
Unless you're absolutely unwilling to use any substitute, our native red pine (Pinus resinosa, AKA Norway pine) produces a wood that is very similar in appearance and working properties...and it would be much easier to find.
