I am in the process of building an entertainment center without doors to cover the electronics. Just about every entertainment center plan I see includes doors to close off the TV, VCR, etc., but I almost never see these doors closed when at relatives or friend’s homes. Yet it seems that they are a given. Why is this?
Also, those of you who make entertainment centers are in for a big boom in business when HDTV takes off. I have yet to see one that will fit the typical entertainment center in stores.

The doors are for when you have guests. In your mad dash to tidy up, the loose stuff in the family room gets thrown in with the television, then the doors are slammed shut before it all falls out. When the guests admire the entertainment unit you laugh and say, "The funny thing is, we never watch television. The set isn't even plugged in."
YOU'RE RIGHT. And I agree that the entertainment centers that my family members have do have doors that close over VCR, stereo, etc. It is maily the TV doors that don't get closed.
I think it depends on the type of entertainment center you've got, but all of my doors are always shut (I don't have a door over the TV, though - I don't particularly like the looks of those "pocket" doors...just personal preference).
The entertainment center I built is attached below, it is a copy/combination of several commercial ones available, and allows for very large TVs by moving the two piers apart (I'm sure you've seen ones like this before, they are very common around here at least...)
