I recently saw an article in Fine Woodworking regarding expoxy inlay. Of course I ran to the basement eager to give it a try. I mixed epoxy with acrylic paint. The result was a goopy mess…kind of like a soft superball. Does anyone know what universal tinting colors are? Are they an oil based paint? Who sells them? Also, are there any substances that would be dangerious to mix with epoxy?

schooch,
You can get universal tinting colors from Woodcraft (http://www.woodcraft.com) that will work with epoxy.

If you're on good terms with any local paint stores, they might hook you up too. The local SW here has four different tint systems for various materials they sell. Last time I wanted to tint epoxy black, they just gave me some compatible black in a foam cup. The Diamond Vogel in town sells UTC's, and as for what they are, I don't know if I can explain beyond the name. They're colors used for tinting whose usage is almost universal as far as compatibility with various products.
I've mixed epoxy and oil-basd paint with excellent results. The most vibrant colors came from using Rustoleum. It took a little longer to dry, maybe half hour before i could sand instead of 5-10 minutes.
You can also add colors to Bondo, but the natural light purple color the mix has constrains your palette. I've used it stained with oil-base-stain "goop" from the bottom of a can to rigidify knots i wanted to feature.
