I’ve got a friend interested in a couple of antique chairs supposedly made out of monkeywood. Does anyone know something about this, or is this a local name given to something else?
Thanks for any info.

Monkeywood is the actual name of the wood. I couldn't find any information on its country of origin, but its characteristics relative to cocobolo can be seen on the following page (3rd pic down):

Perhaps they could tell you something about the origin.

Thanks, forestgirl, I'll pass this along.
This is the kind of topic we need our ailing friend Jon Arno to help out with.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Since you brought it up ,any latest news on how Jon is doing?
Philip
None that I know of. I've just been checking in on the "Where's Jon" thread when there's a new post. Have to confess, I'm a little worried.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
creekwood......I bought some Monkeywood a few years back at Crosscut Hardwoods in south Seattle. Have made several pens from it and also a clock. Still have some. It is sort of reddish brown in color. I don't know where it comes from or if there is another name for it. Rod in Appleton, WA
Some of the monkey wood comes from Hawaii, my wife and I went there a few years ago and a local there showed us her monkey wood furniture and gave us a spatula made from monkey wood.
I believe that the wood from Hawaii is Monkeypod, which is somewhat more coarse grained than the photo of the Monkey wood in an earlier post. Monkeypod is what I also thought of when this thread started. Here is what Monkeypod looks like:
