I’ve been toying with putting a coat of wax over a desk that I finished with poly, roughtly 10 years ago. The finish is worn to say the least. I’ve never used wax before, so I bought a can of Howard Citrus-Sheild Paste Wax and did a test area on the desk. I followed instructions, rubbed it on, waited 3-5 minutes (it was a bit hazy) and buffed out. It looked pretty good at first, then after an hour, all these light colored blotchy spots developed (picture attached).
I tried another coat, just in case. When I rubbed on a new coat of wax, it took away the white blotches, then again, after an hour or so, the spots developed. It almost looks like the wax ate away at the previous poly finish. Is that possible?
Any help is appreciated.

what color wax?
I suspect you are using the wrong color wax. Since the finish is worn (the wax won't do that) the wax will collect in the creases and will turn white when it finally dries. That will take a whilke depending on the depth of the 'crease.'
I recommend that you try their Golden color instead of the Neutral. You may have to scrub the old wax out with a stiff brush when using a solvent to remove it. Test your solvent in an hidden from view site first to be sure the existing finish isn't disolved.
I am rubbing out a cherry table now and am using a light brown wax for this very reason.
