Hi All…
Does anyone know how to bring up serial numbers that have been worn away? Like they do on CSI?
Actually I’m trying to read manufacturer’s names on old chisels… I have a few that I love, but don’t know who made them.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanx.

I did a quick Google search and found this PDF:

More to be found, I'm sure.
Darn. I got a "This file is damaged and cannot be repaired."forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Try downloading it again - it opened fine for me.Cliff
I had never know anyone who made chiesels out of gold and silver.
Try scraping off the crud and rust with a razor blade. Takes off the top layer without wearing out the recessed stamping anymore, such as would happen if using sandpaper. Of course if the lettering is completely worn off you're SOOL.
Sometimes a little chalk dust rubbed over the surface, under a magnifying glass with adjustable light, will revel enough to make an identification. Engineers blue can also be applied and removed from the flat surface, to leave the excess in the recesses. If you are familiar with manufacturers symbols, you can often make an identification from a partial mark.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Acid etching
Thanx everbody...
what i was hoping to hear was like the answer from xedos6... some sort of solution (acidic) that would bring up the letters.
don't need a razor blade to scrape with, cuz there's nothing built up on the surface...
don't need chalk dust, cause there's no figure left at all... i was hoping that engineer's blue (dye) might do the job... where can i get this stuff? -- i need it to mark where the blade is on my table saw's table.
don't need a black light, cuz there's no bodily fluids on my chisels 8>) <tee hee>
keep those cards and letters coming in... thanx again
