I am making a 4 legged-expansion dinning table. I want to use wooden slides (not sure if I will make or buy them). Does anyone have actual experience with the max span for the leaves without using a 5th, center, leg and getting no sag? Any suggestions are welcome.
suggestions for a good finish for this table (cherry) are also welcome.
thanks
Jeff

Jeff,
I'm building an extension table now.
The longer the slides are, and the more segments they have, the less sag you will end up having. (That is, the more the segments overlap one another, the less they will be able to sag.) So making your own will give you more leeway in that dept. I'd say 2-3 feet extension is about the most I'd want to go. There is bound to be some droop, due to the slack in the slide to slide joints.
Having said that, an extended table with no center leg, puts a lot of strain on the attachment points where the slides are fixed to the tops, especially when someone parks his butt right in the center of the extended table, or when two people are yanking the thing apart, even worse if only one person is trying to do it. I like to include a removeable center leg, to be put in place before drawing the table apart.

Ray
especially when someone parks his butt right in the center of the extended table.. Oh geeeee XXX in this Discussion... I tried to get her to but she insisted she was a Lady...I have a table.. STORE Bought.. Long ago.. Has oak? I think dovetailed slides.. It opens about 72 inches... 4 X 18" leaves..Had it since 1965 or so.. Still works OK! NOT a one person job though! NO SAG! I think the slider wood is about 2.5 inch square..
But the sticks are shorter for each extension..Not sure it helps but...
I have delivered extension dining tables using four and five, 11" leaves, hiding crosswise below the top, and with a drop-down central leg. Worked out all the details at that time, but cannot locate my sketches since my last move! Have a new request for a matching one from a related family member .... so must look harder. Will post whatever I find or can recreate. Recall purchasing the dovetail Oak slides, which included several pages of recommendations .... very helpfull. They came from Constantines, but do not see them currently offered.
