I am interested in making an exterior door with a shaker design. Would you comment on using walnut, a native hardwood, as the primary wood. Thanks

Hi,
Walnut will make a lovely door. However for an exterior application I would make sure to use quartersawn stock to minimize shrinkage particularly in the wider bottom rail. Also if the door is unprotected from the elements and is left natural with only clear coating, expect it to go grey over time. It might take years but eventually, if it's exposed to enough sunlight and rain, the walnut will redden or lighten and then go grey in color. It'll still look great on the inside but unless you coat it with a varnish with an ultraviolet inhibitor in it and recoat it every year, you'll lose your color over time. Good luck.
