Peter: I am considering purchasing a dining room table with a cherry veneer tabletop from Havertys. However the floor model shows some scratches and if I purchase one, I would like to put my own finish on the top in order to protect it and make it more durable. This table will undergo a lot of use.
Would applying my own finish over the existing one be successful? Or would I risk some sort of chemical reaction between what I apply and the manufacturer’s finish? Any other suggestions? Thanks for your input.

John,
You say the top has some scratches. Are you able to get it at a discount? Do you know what the finish is?
You also say you want to put your own finish over it but you didn't say what your finish is.
If I was to put a new finish on, I would remove what is there and start fresh. If your table is going to get a lot of use, why not let the scratched finish get abused for a while and then refinish it?
