I need to find some stainless steel screws (#6 or #8) that are 5″ or 6″ in length. I need to attach a couple of plinth blocks to the outside of my house. I tried mcfeely’s, but they don’t seem to have what I need. Any suggestions?

My guess is that finding that length in such a small diameter screw is going to be a challenge. The strength of screws that long is insufficient enough for installation without twisting the head off.

Particularly in stainless, I break the two inch ones all the time on a very low torque setting.

Try http://www.swansecure.com we use them all the time. They are one of the largest SS specialty supplier for fasteners in stainless. If you look on structural framing, I think they have smaller sizes, 1/4" that are long enough. You will have a problem finding something that long in the diameter you are looking for.

Not everyone realizes that stainless is a weaker steel than cheeper carbon steels. That is why long SS screws are very difficult to drive without snapping If you need corosion resistance could decking screws work?

Mudman,
You should always predrill any long screw. Drill it to the thickness of the root of the thread and then redrill to the length and diameter of the shank.. I know it's more work but it really makes a stronger screw and eliminates the chance of breaking a screw off..
Sure a lot of time you can get away with just driving a screw in but if you measure pull out there is much more resistance to pull out with a properly drilled out hole than one that is just jammed in..
OHH YEA, you definately need to predrill.... damn near any screw. But at 3", even if you properly predrill, most hard woods could snap a #6 screw. If it where a bigger screw, there may be no problem

Most metro areas these days have places that sell awide variety of fasteners to the construction industry. Look in the yellow pages under fasteners; two in my area are Fastenal and Viking Fasteners. These places will sell you one screw or a hundred thousand.
I buy #8 in 5-6" length all the time -- although I have not asked about ss. The ones I buy look like they have a black, shiny powder coating.

I found 4 1/2 and 5" could be ordered at my local fencing outfit. Might be an option.
Don't have any specific references otherwise, aside from a mention for Swan as commented above. They make a large # of stainless screws in various sizes. Might have to go to a 10 or 12 head though.
