I have a 2-hp air compressor that sometimes cant keep up with my woodworking tools. Portable tanks can be bought very cheap. Would it help to add one to my system to give me some stored up capacity? Also does it need a line in and out or is one in adequate?
thanks,

Stevo, you'll have extra reserve but the compressor will cycle longer.
One connecting pipe is fine, but make it as big as possible. Also, with soap solution check and seal all leaks. (They add up) Stein.
What type of tools are you using, and do you use them for long periods of time? You may need to step up to a bigger compressor, or an extra reserve tank may do the trick. A few more details would help here
I use a 30 gallon tank from an old compressor for an extra tank. The tank connects to a 20 gallon compressor. This gives me 50 gallons of air for painting or an occasional use of an air sander. Most of the time the extra tank is not connected, just when I need extra capacity. If your present compressor is too small for a shop ,consider buying a new one. Use your old one for jobs where you need portability.
