Does it matter when I build & assemble face frames for a builtin bookcase / cabinet unit? I was going to build them in the garage before the units were installed but then I thought it might be better if I installed the cases and then built the frames. That would account for any ‘customizations’ that occured during installation. My wife wants it to look like a buitin and not like 2 bookcases and 2 cabinets lined up against the wall.
The 2 outer bookcases are 12″ deep & 24″ wide, the 2 center cabinets are 16″deep and 32″ wide. They’ll have a 4″ rail with crown molding to the ceiling, 6″ bottom rail, and 4″ stiles with a 1″ overhang in each unit.
Thanks.

KnotRealGood ,
I would make the center as one piece , 64" wide and 16" deep , then make each end unit as 24" wide and 12" deep . I would put the face frames on before installation . One word of caution you said the crown mold will go to the ceiling , how will you be able to stand the cabinets up once in the room ? On floor to ceiling units we usually make a loose toe kick say 3-4" tall with maybe a 1 and a 1/2" bottom rail .the toe kicks can be just back behind the face frames . Generally I make the butt sides a scribe end to assure a nice tight seam .

I should've been more specific. The unit is 2" short of the ceiling, and the crown moulding will be installed after the unit is in place.Safety tip o' the day - Always keep your three good fingers away from the blade and remember to wear a safety monocle over your one good eye.
Hi KnotRealGood ,
You did not say how tall the ceiling is but are you sure allowing 2" is enough ? If you do the math or measure the diagonal on the say the 16" side of the cabinet , you will then know how much ceiling height will be required to stand the unit up .I think you may want to take a closer look at this measurement , just my thoughts . The deeper the cabinet the longer the diagonal gets , so the 12" boxes will require less space to stand up then the 16" box will .
make sure to avoid plan # B : the chainsaw trim job
