hello ALL, I am looking for a little input and I am sure this is the right place.
A year ago I bought all the nessecary equipement for sharpening carbide and steel blades, bandsaw bands, chainsaw chains and handsaws. I have spent the time since practicing on my own blades and now, in response to demand, I am going to start sharpening other peoples stuff. I am the only person in my semi small town to offer such a service.
After years of sending my own blades out of state, I have a pretty good idea as to what to charge for circular blades. As for the others, I always sharpened them by hand when nessecary.
My question to all of you fine woodworkers, what is a fair price, what do you pay for sharpening?
thanks for your time,
David J. Peschio

Dave,
I just had a Disston 26" D-8 handsaw sharpened. The going in price was $7. However, he had to joint it and sharpen and the price was $ 18 and change. I could not be happier...and it seems very cheap.
I just had the 3 blades of my jointer sharpened at 15.00 for the set. I also had a 80 tooth blade with 4 broken teeth replaced and sharpened that was 28.00
This is a bit off the subject, but I have an old HSS circular saw tooth set machine I got as part of the "contents of a room" at an auction. It is manually operated, but seems to work well. It sets in one direction so you do every other tooth, then flip the blade. It is adjustable and looks like it could take blades from 6 to 20 inches in diameter.
Would you be interested in this item? Not much call for HSS circ blades these days . . .I was going to keep it on a shelf as a conversation piece. But tools were meant to be used so if you can use it, let me know and we can talk further.

Thanks Jim,
actually I already have one that sits on a self as well. It would be nice to find another use for it.

Here, handsaws are by size & # of teeth- short back saws are between 4-6, mid range are about 8, long saws like your grand-dad used are only about 10 bucks. For circular saw blades, I pay about 15 cents a tooth, for jointer knives, it's 80 cents an inch.

This is a little off topic but what do you sharpen jointer and planer blades with? it seems like all the jointer blades I see are sharpened on a blanchard grinder, which is a fairly coarse grind. I have a friend sharpen my blades on his surface grinder with a 60 grit wheel. The edge quality is far better, and the blades seem to stay sharper longer. If you have a surface grinder, you may want to try this as I think it would give you an edge in the business.
Dave: to give you some idea of what they charge here for various tools..
Chain saw loops==> $4.00 Wood chisels==> $2.00
plane Irons ==>$2.00 scissors==> $2.00
knifes ==>$1.50 Loping shears==> $2.50
Hand saws==> $5.00 axes==> $2.50
Lawn mower & tractor blades==> $5.00
Elec hedge trimmers==> $7.00
Hope this helps.........ToolDoc
