I’m looking for a tool to enable me to create faux “bowtie” mortise inlays. What I envision is a steel punch chisel in the bow tie shape that will penetrate & score a hardwood frame which I could then clear with router & hand tools. The punch would then be used to cut the bowtie from a sheet of veneer to the exact size of the notched recess. I want to get about a 1.5″ X 3/4″ cutout. Has anyone seen a tool of this type? I’ve used a similar tool for hinge installation.

Possibly you could find someone with a laser etching machine. If you make the piece of light wood, then he could etch the bowtie in using a dark shade and then you are finished. No muss, no fuss.

9619, I've seen lasers used to etch and cut wood, this is the first I've heard of using a laser as a coloring tool. What have you used it on? Any pitfalls?Pete
Pete,
You can call me Mel. 9619 is the street number of my house.
I have a friend who paid the big bucks for one of those laser etchers. He gets commissions to make badges and to do other things. I don't think it is enough to pay off the thing, but he is having fun.I have never used it. I have seen the results and they are VERY interesting. I believe we will see more and more of its use on furniture in ways we cannot now envision. Technology is our friend, not our enemy. Our job is to tame it and make it do interesting, good things. Why not use it to make "faux bowties"?
If I hear more interesting applications, I'll let you know.

Technology is our friend, not our enemy..I tell that to myself every time my old Puter crashes!
If you're going to rout it, you might as well use a template. there are inside/outside collars/bit combinations made for this.
