Side tables are always useful, and portable. Shaker style allows a variety of options to play with (tapered legs, turned legs, etc.), and is simple enough to blend in with a lot of other furniture styles.
I like wall cabinets. They were quite popular for awhile but, the rustic fad kicked in and now the MCM fad is on us.
I modeled one after Garrett Hack's seen here on FWW. I also have one of my own that moves pretty well based on Greene and Greene elements. I make a few and hang them on the wall till they sell.
Clark Kellogg's arch-front cabinet caught my eye and I did a version of that as well. Clark's design has a lot of really fun elements in it. His article, again, is here on FWW.
A simple table is a good beginner project. Add a drawer, and it's a bit more intermediate. Raised panel doors add a bit more complexity. From that point on, projects aren't any more difficult, just larger. Then you can add in more shaping or carving.
