I recently acquired a powermatic 15 planer and have spent the better part of this week cleaning it up. I now have it running and the blades it came with are far from new with a few nicks. I am wonder where people like to buy blades for a older planer like this and do you spend extra for the fancier steel or carbide tipped?

I think you could probably send out for sharpening. In the end, a hand plane should hit all surfaces anyway. For that reason, I don't get hung up on finish from the planer. The cats meow is the helical head but they are big $$.
Try infinity tools
I used to have knives in my 16 inch planer and switched to a helical head. If not, buy a second set of knives from a place like Infinity. Then find a good sharpening service to sharpen the old set and rotate your knives from the sharpener to the planer. Send the dull set to the sharpener and install the sharp knives. You will always have a sharp set of knives on hand. You really shouldn't need to buy new knives each time you need to have sharp blades. A store like Woodcraft usually knows of a good sharpening service.
