Hi Folks,
I was talking with a person from a company that refurbs our fire extinguishers here at work and he mentioned a new technology called FE 36. It’s supposedly more environmentally friendly.
What most inpressed me was the fact that it is not supposed to be injurious to electronic equipment such as power tools. This seems like it could be a great advantage to traditional fire extinguishers/sprinkler systems in our woodshops.
Anyone have any inputs/experience with these?

Too funny!
I just wonder about all the power tools that I have and God forbid if I had a fire and had to use the ABCD fire extinguishers to put it out. Apparently the powder in them will cause major damage to electrical components, i.e. motors, switches, etc.
Also, even with a sprinkler system there is bound to be a certain amount of damage done to these parts. Halon systems have their faults and negatives, i.e. you had best not be in the room when activated. This new FE type seems to be a good answer albeit they are a bit expensive initially.
If you have old powertoools and insurance, you never seem to come thru a disaster without a significant loss. It would seem to nme that the FE approach might mitigate at least some of it.

You've got this all wrong. You wanna uprgrade your tools, don'tcha? First, you schedule a fire. Then spray it with the bad stuff. Voila'. New tools are ON THE WAY!!!
Den,
Taint the ones I can replace that I'm worried about, it's the ones ye caint!
Also it's about me wood stash. It's just outside da do over the garage too. I commandeered most of the space on the top flo and that's where I keep me stash.
See from what that there seller feller tol me the new stuff evaporates after it's done its job and doesn't do any damage to the 'quipment of anythang. Plus I won't have them enviromaniacs messin wid me haid cuz it isn't supposed to harm the air.
I was just funnin but on the serious side a lot of it is true. I've been looking into it and it seems like a very good idea to me. Talking with the sales rep. and he told me that the insurance companies are really excited about it, could reduce premiums (Ya, cynics will laugh) and payback costs for them.
And I don't have to go thru all the hassles of replacing all my tools that would normally be damaged by conventional systems. Now think about getting all that heavy metal out of the damaged woodshop and gettin their replacements back in place. That alone has to be worth sumpin.

Wine,
Still trying to find pricing info. on extinguishers. There is also a system, similar in concept to Halon that uses this new FE product. The salesman simply said, "it's expensive".
Usually that means not an option for me. :-)
