Thanks to all for advice on using bleach to get out color of aniline dye. First let me say that it WORKS! I mixed up a saturated solution of pool chlorine powder in hot water as suggested on the Homestead finishing web site, and it was like a magic eraser that completely restored the color of the wood to an unstained condition. The dye started to fade on contact, and in a few hours it was bleached out. I then wiped it down with vinegar to neutralize the base, and then wiped that off with a sponge with water. There is a very slight residual vinegar smell, so I’ll wipe again with water. It worked equally wellon surfaces where I had sanded to try to get off the dye, compared to those where absolkuttely no sanding was done. Now I can start over again and re-stain the color I need. The fumes were not bad since there was no spraying, and I did it outdoors. Of course you have to be careful of drips and clothing, use gloves goggles and a mask. A splash on the cornea would be bad news.
