Friends,
I just called the Lie Nielsen office and asked if they knew of any companies that made a fence that could be attached to their #7 or #8 jointer. The response I got was that they are planning to make one, and that it could be out in mid 2008.

I use the LV one held on with rare-earth magnets. Works well.
D,
You said: "I use the LV one held on with rare-earth magnets. "Sounds intriguing. Pardon my lack of knowledge, but would you please give me some more details: how many magnets, what size, where placed? Any hints would be appreciated. I learn fast. Thank you,

MelHere's the link: http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=41716&cat=1,41182I appreciate all the insight you give as a Woodcraft employee--very helpful. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
Tom,
You are a gentleman as well as a master woodworker. I have looked up the website and all is obvious!Glad you like the info I get in working at Woodcraft. If you ever have any questions, I would be glad to help. You can send the message to my email if you'd like. As I have said before, I get nothing from Woodcraft for doing this, and I don't flack for them. I am just happy to provide whatever I have learned. As you may have guessed, they sell LN, not LV, so I wasn't aware of how the LV fence attaches. It looks to be clever and pragmatic.Thank you.

I see you got the answer to your question the same as I would have given. One of the nice thing about the LV fence is that it fits any metal plane. The only adjustment that may need to be made is where the stop pin is placed. And that only requires unscrewing it and moving it to a different hole. Also the fence will work on either side.
My the way, I am glad to find someone who is a fast learner. I have been told I am only a "half-fast" learner. :>).

I really like that LV fence. Thanks for point out how it attaches, and also how to make the adjustments of the stopping pin. When you use it, and are planing very hard, do the magnets really keep it on tight, or is there a tendency for the fence to come off?Mel

They hold so tight that it can be a struggle to get it off. You actually have to slide it forward to gradually get the magnets past the metal. I usually get the joint close by eye, check it with a square and then use the fence to finish it up.
Mel,
Search out an original Stanley or Millers Falls. They should work without any issue. I got a MF with a Type 11 #6 at an antique mall for $85.00. The #6 had at least 90% Jappaning and nearly a full blade, no splits in wood or cracks or chips on cast iron. The fence holds true, and I actually like how it sets up better than the Stanley. Incidentally, this purchase was in 2006.

TZ,
Another MF'er!
I have two, #9 (My Dads old plane) & #15 (gift from Frosty) and I REALLY LIKE them. These planes were made for planing.

Tony,
I will keep my eye out for a Millers Falls #6 Type 11 as you said. Thanks for the heads up.MelMeasure your output in smiles per board foot.
