I am looking at hand hewing about 500 lin. ft. of cedar for beam stock and I am also looking at the Festool model HL850 E Hand Planer with the optional Rustic undulating planer head. This will set me back about 5 bills , so for around a buck a foot the job will be done. Anyone out there have any time with one of these planers and if you do what do you think of them. I see more and more posts talking about Festool and most if not all are positive. I have the ATF 55 E saw with the CT 22 E dust extractor and 2 Guide rails and I love it. The plunge cut on the saw takes a little getting used to . Thanks for your help. Rick.

Yes I bought the Festool planer and the undulating planer head for the same reason you want it, for the exposed beams for a new home I am building. I was looking for a hand hewn rustic look. I worked with the planer head for some time but just could not get a realistic look. The sample I did looked fake nothing like a hand hewn beam. I finally returned the planer head but kept the planer on the off chance I might ues it some day. It is still setting there. If you would like to buy it, make me an offer.

Dale ,
What piece of this big old world do you live on . I live in Wisconsin. Do you have any number in mind for this planer. I would assume it came with a case(Systainer). I would be interested if the price is right and the shipping was fare. Thank you for the offer. Rick.
I live in northern California. Yes the planer is in the case. I have never used the planer except to the tests I did with that undulating planer head. I do not remember what I paid for the planer I have only had it for a few months. I could look up the price but I am sure you know what the retail price is. They are the same everyware. No deals! I would sell it to you for 80% of cost. The shipping would be by UPS, actual shipping cost.

Rick,
I can't comment on the Festool planer, but I have a Makita portable planer. It has 6 1/8" knives, and I believe that Makita still makes this unit. It seems to work well. I bought it as part of an estate, and have not put too many miles on it, but it seems to do a nice job. I thought of it for your needs since you are doing beams, that are usually wider than 3".Alan

Alan,
Funny you should mention the Makita ,it was my second choice. This may happen any way due to the fact that I need to plane down 36 4 foot stair treads that are 150+ year old logs that have been split in half and need to be smooth on one side and morticed in to yet another long split log that will be the stringers EEEEEEEEEEEYYYYOOOOWWWWWWWWW. Ive got a couple of long days ahead of me. What I really need to do is post some pic's of this project , it is really something. Thanks . Rick.
We actually do hand hewing on occasion and for faux hewing we had the blades on our 3-1/4" makita ground with a curve. We did this long before the Festool was available so $500 versus $139...what would you do?
