My 20 year old Festool ETS EQ 150/3 sander conked out yesterday – probably the switch or some other electrical part as it simply stopped working with no crunching, whining or smell of burning. 🙂 Festool may be able to fix it but if not …….
….I would buy a new one. After all, 20 years use with no problems until now and very good performance says a lot. But ….
I have 3 new & unsused spare sanding pads (hard, soft & intermediate) that I would hope to use on any new Festool 150 sander of the same type. But looking at pics of the new spare sanding pads, I seem to see two extra holes at the interface of pad to sander; meaning two extra tabs on the new model that are not on the old model; two tabs that will prevent me putting my old-style pads on to a new style sander body.
Does anyone have such a sander and, if so, have you encountered this problem of a changed interface between sanding pad and sander body?
I will be annoyed if they have changed it as these spare pads now cost a whopping £47 EACH! I go through one about once every 2-3 years……

Ooops...
I take it you checked the switch then?

The sander has been fixed by Festool servicing. It needed some worn bits replaced but the cause of it ceasing to go was a fault in the motor armature - the most expensive bit to replace. Still, I reckoned that £114 in total for the fix, rebuild, postage and "safety check", along with a 6 month guarantee, was better than £340 for a new one - especially if my spare pads wouldn't fit the new model. ......
Alas, first use sees the sander go very well at sanding but also getting too hot to hold after 15 minutes. What have they done to it, the rascals!! Must it go back & forth endless times to get a proper fix? Will it ever get fixed at all?
A saga begins.

They probably didn't know how to fix it it was so old! Going back and forth is the only way to get anything done according to most companies! Also that "safety check" is probably them just hitting it with a hammer and seeing if it turns on. At least it didn't take until September to arrive!

Leo, lad,
That sander is older than thee but then so are all sorts of things that still work, such as my Jennett-teaser.
Now, have you give them Fine Woodworking magazine fellows that hundred dollars of birfday money to join this fine website? They will teach you all sorts, especially how to spend your horde (or is it hoard) of coins on gleaming toolen.

My sander is 12 years old and still goes perfectly. Also my Screw/Drill battery driven tool. Recently built a new house and the :chippies" who had top line other brands kept borrowing it as it out performed even the latest competitors. You have the best so be happy
