The Duluth Trading Co. catalog came yesterday, and this made me laugh:

I’m kind of ashamed to admit that I didn’t know what “fettling” meant until yesterday.

Okay, I knew what fettled met but what's a galoot?
Neil
In woodworking, I think it's an Australian term for folks that collect, use and/or refurbish old tools.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Hey I gotta get one of those babies. That's too funny:-)
Neil,
Look here for the definition of a galoot.

Thanks, I feel a wee bit smarter
Neil
In the 19th century it meant someone who was clumsy or thoughtless.
BRB,
...but used in an affectionate way. I had a fine labrador/collie cross that was a galoot - paws like dinner plates and a daft look on her face at all times, but especially when being chased by frisky heifers or trotting in the bogland.
Lataxe, not a galoot (too handsome and sophisticated).
A Galoot in tool terms is someone who likes hand tools, especially old ones, and participates in a global email list on same, oddly enough, called Old Tools. There are also several Galoot-related web sites. You'd like the Galoots, Lataxe. They are decent, Trusty fellows. Joe
Joe,
But, do they ever cut wood?
Regards,Bob @ Kidderville Acres
A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Some are very fine craftsmen. Others are more like me. Quite a few of the regulars on this site are Galoots.J
Bob,
Galoots do not cut wood, they gather sawdust. The sharp points either side of the galoots are for cutting. If your galoot is consistantly clogged, you need to clear the fleam out of it.
