Hello
Need some help – I have to look at a vintage chair for repair. Customer says it is fiber glass from an original 1960’s manufacturer. Some distributors copy the chair today using an injection mold plastic. Can anyone suggest methods to determine how to recognize a fiberglass material vs the new plastic material when I go see the chair>
Thanks,

plastic?
If it's cracked you should be able to see white glass fibers in the area like frayed cloth. Depending on quality of gel coat, on the back you may see the pattern of the glass mat or cloth showing through. If there are any through bolts or screws, remove one or two and observe the hole. Plastic should be a consistent color and texture through and through. Depending on the damage and repair required, you may be able to scratch the surface with a pen knife to see what's what. Pray it's fiberglass. Even with the gel coat it's easier. Hope this helps
Back side
I would think fiberglass chairs are made made in female molds, something like canoes. In that case a gel coat is sprayed onto the mold surface and then fiberglass cloth and resin is built up inside. The outside is smooth. The inside you can see the mat and resin. I would think that a look at the back side of legs or underside of the seat will quickly tell.

Fiberglass
Thanks much guys -
President Johnson couldn't be anymore knowledgable then you both are. I now know what to look for when I go out to residence. I realize this fourm has taken a lot of criticism - I'm a long time user - I needed help - and it was there the next day. The fourm is not everything we want but it works -I hope it lasts.
Thanks Again
